Wei: King Si of Chen, Cao Zhi, courtesy name Zijian, was the middle son of Emperor Wu. At the age of ten, he could recite more than one hundred thousand words of the Odes and the Book of Documents, and was skilled in composition. Whenever he read Buddhist scriptures, he would linger over them with sighs of admiration, considering them the ultimate origin of the supreme Way. When intoning texts with the melodic inflections of the seven musical tones, everyone in the world chanted and modeled after him. Once, roaming Mount Yu, he heard an extraordinary sound, clear, resonant, sorrowful, and melodious. Thereupon he imitated the sound to compose Sanskrit chants. Today's Buddhist rituals include the Mount Yu Chants, which are the remaining performances thereof (Hongming ji).
