In the third month, Xiao Ji, King of Wuling and Regional Inspector of Yizhou, was in Shu. In the seventeenth year, having heard that Hou Jing had captured the palace city, and that Xiao Yi, King of Xiangdong, was punishing him, he said to his aides and advisors, "How could a mere seventh-ranked clerk and man of letters save the state?" Just then, flowers blossomed around the knots of the cypress pillars in Xiao Ji's bedchamber, which he took to be an auspicious omen. In the fourth month, he assumed the imperial throne, changing the reign era to Tianzheng and appointing his son Yuanzhao as crown prince. In the third month of the second year of Chengsheng, Emperor Yuan, hearing that Xiao Ji was coming, sent a letter requesting Western Wei to attack Shu. Xiao Ji, hearing that there were Western Wei troops, dispatched the former Regional Inspector of Liangzhou, Qiao Yan, to return with his army and relieve Shu. In the seventh month, unable to retreat from the Gorge Mouth, Xiao Ji again sailed downstream toward the east. The Liang guerrilla general Fan Meng pursued and decapitated Xiao Ji. Xiao Ji's young sons—Yuanman, Yuanzhao, and Yuanzheng—were consigned to the prison of the chamberlain for law enforcement and died there. In the eighth month, Yuansu surrendered Chengdu to Western Wei. (Liang Chronicles)
