In the eighth month, the ruler of Northern Qi traveled to Jinyang and returned to Ye. Because the two teachings of Buddhism and Daoism differed, he wished to eliminate one of them. Gathering scholars of both schools, he had them debate in his presence. Thereupon, he decreed that all Daoist priests shave their heads and become śramaṇas. His edict declared: "Those who have attained immortality may fly upward and soar far away; those who cannot do so must thoroughly revise their practices, return to correctness, and report to the Supreme Controller of the Office of Clerical Affairs to be tonsured and leave home." Four who refused to comply were executed, after which the others obeyed the command. Because of this, there were no Daoist priests throughout the entire realm of Qi.
