Mount Baizhang. In Longxing Route of Jiangxi (ancient Hongzhou), there was a Chan Master named Huaihai, a son of the Wang family from Changle in Fuzhou. In his youth, he left the worldly dust. He was thoroughly trained in the three trainings. When Mazu was spreading his teaching in Jiangxi, [Huaihai] devoted his heart to taking refuge under him. Together with Xitang Zhizang and Nanquan Puyuan, he was designated as having entered the inner chamber. At that time, these three great beings formed a tripartite pillar among the teaching gates. The Master ascended the hall and said: 'The spiritual light shines uniquely, completely detached from sense faculties and dust. Its substance reveals the true and constant, unconstrained by words and letters. The mind-nature is undefiled, originally complete in itself. Merely depart from delusive conditions, and you are the suchlike Buddha.' The Master created the monastic regulations and rites, naming them the Pure Regulations (Qinggui). On the thirteenth day of the first month of the ninth year of the Yuanhe era, he returned to quiescence at the age of ninety-five. An imperial decree bestowed the posthumous title 'Chan Master Dazhi,' and his stupa was named Great Precious Victorious Wheel. The Master was a dharma heir of Mazu (Records of the Transmission of the Lamp).
