Yaoshan. Chan Master Weiyan was of the Han family of Jiangzhou. At age seventeen, he left household life under Chan Master Huizhao of Mount Xishan in Chaoyang. He received the precepts from Vinaya Master Xicao of Mount Heng. Broadly versed in the sūtras and treatises, he strictly observed the monastic precepts. He first visited Shitou, who directed him to see Mazu. He returned again to Shitou and comprehended the essentials of mind. Later he resided at Yaoshan in Lizhou, where an oceanic assembly gathered like clouds. Minister Li Ao, styled Xizhi, served as prefect of Langzhou (the Changde Circuit); admiring the master's Way, he entered the mountain to visit him. Yaoshan read a sūtra without looking at him. Li said, 'Seeing the face is not as good as hearing the name.' The master called to him, and Li responded. Yaoshan said, 'Why esteem the ear and despise the eye?' Li apologized and then asked, 'What is the Way?' Yaoshan pointed with his finger up and down, saying, 'Do you understand?' Li said, 'I do not.' Yaoshan said, 'Clouds are in the blue sky, water is in the pitcher.' Joyfully, Li replied with a verse: / 'Having refined his physical form to resemble a crane's, / Beneath a thousand pines are two cases of sūtras. / I came asking about the Way, and there was no other speech: / Clouds are in the blue sky, water is in the pitcher.' / He further asked, 'What are discipline, concentration, and wisdom?' Yaoshan said, 'Here there is no such idle furniture.' Li grasped the meaning and took his leave. The master was a dharma heir of Chan Master Shitou Xiqian. Coming to this, in the second year of Taihe, he entered tranquility at the age of eighty-four. An imperial edict bestowed the posthumous title Great Master Hongdao, and his stūpa was named Huacheng (Transmission of the Lamp).
