The year yisi: the first year of Guangqi. In the second month, the Emperor returned to the capital and changed the reign era. The eunuch Tian Lingzi grew even more unrestrained in his authority and power. Wang Chongrong, the military commissioner of Hezhong, repeatedly submitted memorials listing Lingzi's crimes and evil deeds. Chongrong reported this to Li Keyong, who led troops to join him. In the twelfth month, Keyong advanced to press upon the capital. Tian Lingzi escorted the Emperor at night out through the Kaiyuan Gate to flee to Fengxiang. In the spring of the second year of Guangqi, in the first month, Tian Lingzi requested the Emperor to flee to Xingyuan; the Emperor refused. That night, Lingzi led troops into the palace and abducted the Emperor to flee to Baoji; neither the prime ministers nor court officials knew of it. When departing Baoji, he left Yang Sheng to guard Shan Pass (the mouth of the Xingyuan route); no sooner had the imperial carriage entered Shan Pass than Zhu Mei, the military commissioner of Binning, had already surrounded Baoji. Heir Prince Wen of Xiang was the great-great-grandson of Suzong; being ill, he could not keep up with the Emperor and stayed behind at Zuntu Relay Station, where he was captured by Mei, who brought him back with him to Fengxiang. In the third month, the imperial carriage arrived in Xingyuan. Zhu Mei coerced the civil and military officials to install Prince Wen of Xiang as acting supervisor of military and state affairs. In Chang'an, civil and military officials, including Grand Preceptor to the Crown Prince Pei Qu, urged Prince Wen of Xiang to ascend the imperial throne; he changed the reign era to Jianzhen, and from afar honored the Emperor as 'Supreme Primordial Emperor.' Yang Fugong, Commissioner of the Imperial Bodyguard, circulated a proclamation throughout the Guanzhong region stating that whoever took Zhu Mei's head would be rewarded with the post of military commissioner of Jingnan. Mei's general Wang Xingyu captured Mei and beheaded him. The Prince of Xiang fled to Hezhong; Wang Chongrong feigned welcoming him, but seized and killed Wen. An imperial edict appointed Xingyu as military commissioner of the Jingnan Army (Basic Annals of the Book of Tang).
