丙辰三年正月九峰玄禪師戒其徒曰。無虛度光陰。無虛消信施。既已出家唯道是履名大丈夫。云已寂然入定。至三月二十日而入滅。

In the bingchen year, the third year [of Qianning] (896), in the first month, Chan Master Xuan of Jiufeng admonished his disciples, saying: "Do not waste time in vain; do not consume the offerings of the faithful in vain. Having already left household life, to tread only upon the Way is to be called a great hero." Having spoken, he silently entered samādhi, and on the twentieth day of the third month he entered extinction.
