Mount Niutou. Chan Master Farong was a man from Yanling in Runzhou, with the surname Wei. At the age of nineteen, his learning encompassed the classics and histories. Soon after, he read the Great Prajñā and thoroughly understood ultimate emptiness. Suddenly one day he sighed, saying: "The worldly texts of Confucianism and Daoism are not the ultimate teaching; the correct contemplation of Prajñā is the boat to leave the world." Thereupon he went into seclusion on Mount Mao, submitted to a master, and shaved his hair. Later he went to Mount Niutou in Jiankang and sat in quiet contemplation observing the mind in the stone cave on the northern cliff of Youqi Monastery. There was the anomaly of a hundred birds presenting flowers, and tigers and wolves surrounding his dwelling. The Fourth Patriarch gathered and delivered him (Chuandeng lu).
