In the eleventh month, King Yang of Wu in Huainan ascended the imperial throne. Xu Wen, Chancellor of Wu, died. The ruler of Wu appointed his son Zhigao as commander-in-chief of internal and external military affairs. Zhigao was originally surnamed Li. In the second year of Tang Zhaozong's Qianning era, Yang Xingmi attacked Haozhou, and his soldiers captured him upon pillaging Xuzhou. He was eight years old. Xingmi adopted him as his son. Xingmi's eldest son Wo despised him. Xingmi said to his general Xu Wen, "This child's physique, demeanor, and discernment are quite extraordinary. I surmise that Wo will definitely not tolerate him. I now bestow him upon you to be your son." Wen named him Zhigao. Zhigao served Wen with a diligence and filial piety exceeding that of his own sons. Wen therefore loved him and had him manage household affairs. When he grew up, he was fond of books and skilled in archery, heroic in understanding and character. Xingmi said to Wen, "Zhigao is an outstanding talent; none of the sons of the various generals can match him." In the second year of Jin Gaozu's Tianfu era, he received the abdication of Wu.
