On the twentieth day of the ninth month, Dharma Master Biancai of Longjing Mountain in Hangzhou entered quiescence. The master's name was Yuanjing. From the end of Renzong's Jiayou era through the three reigns of Zhiping and Xining, he resided at Upper Tianzhu for seventeen years; his virtue filled both the court and the countryside. During the Yuanfeng era, he resigned and then resumed residence for another three years, later living at Longjing. In his daily activities of eating and resting, light flowed from between his eyebrows, yielding relics. He said to Canliaozi Daqian, "My pure karma is already complete." After seven days, without illness, he passed away lying on his right side. Su Zhe, Vice Director of the Chancellery, composed the inscription for his stupa. Su Shi, Academician of the Hall of the Dragon Diagram and Prefect of Hangzhou, offered a funeral sacrifice for him. The text said: "Confucius and Laozi had different gates; Confucianism and Buddhism divide into separate realms. Moreover, between them Chan and Vinaya attack one another. I see the great sea has south, north, and east; though the rivers differ, where they arrive is the same. Only the Great Dharma Master from precepts and concentration penetrated all: in Vinaya there is neither keeping nor breaking, defilement and purity are both empty; in exposition there is neither eloquence nor hesitation, phenomena and principle are both harmonized. Like an unmoving mountain, like a bell regularly struck, like the water reflecting the single moon, like the wind through the ten thousand hollows. Though eighty-one years of life have an end, responding to things as they meet, his giving was inexhaustible. When I first came to Wu, I still saw five masters: in exposition there were Bian (Haiyue) and Zhen (Nanping); in Chan there were Lian (Dajue) and Song (Mingjiao). After twenty years, only this elder remained. Now he too is gone; whom will future generations look up to as their model?" (Dongpo wenji, Longjing bei ji).
