Chan Master Congyue of Doushuai Monastery in Longxing Superior Prefecture of Jiangxi (now Longxing Circuit) was born into the Xiong clan of Ganzhou. At first he served as head monk at Daowu. He visited Venerable Zhi of Yunggai, who directed him to see Chan Master Wen of Dongshan, where he profoundly grasped the profound import. He assumed his first abbacy at Luyuan. At this point, in the eleventh month, on the xinmao day, in the winter of the sixth year of the Yuanyou era, the master bathed, assembled the congregation, and spoke a gāthā, saying: "Forty and eight, / Sages and worldlings all slain. / If not a hero, / The road on Long'an is slippery." He then passed away suddenly. The one who grasped the essentials of the Dharma and awakened to the mind was Layman Wujin, Lord Zhang Shangying. The lord dispatched an envoy to bring offerings of sacrifice, saying: "The deceased teacher had great power in the Way within the ancestral patriarchs' school; we must not let those of the future have nothing from which to raise reverence." He had him stupaed at Ru Peak on Long'an, and later petitioned to have a posthumous master's title bestowed upon him. He was a Dharma heir of Chan Master Zhenjing Wen and received the transmission together with Gao of Fayun.
