Emperor Taizong of Jin, Sheng, passed away in the twelfth month of the twelfth year of Tianhui. Emperor Xiaocheng, Dan, Temple Name Xizong, ascended the throne. He was the eldest legitimate grandson of Taizu and the son of Zongjun. He styled the year the thirteenth year of Tianhui; in the wuwu year, he changed the reign era to Tianjuan, and in the xinyou year to Huangtong. In the jisi year, on the tenth day of the twelfth month of the ninth year of Huangtong, he was assassinated by his cousin Liang, Prince of Qi. Xiaocheng was on the throne for sixteen years. In his youth he was intelligent and discerning; he mastered the canonical classics and was fond of literary composition and imperial decorum, so Taizong held him in deep esteem and affection. Yet he normally relished killing, and in his later years his nature grew especially tyrannical. The imperial clansmen and senior ministers all feared they would not escape death, so they formed an alliance, waited for an opportunity, and assassinated him. After Liang ascended the imperial throne, he posthumously degraded Dan to Prince of Donghun. After Liang died, Shizong ascended the throne, granted Dan the posthumous title Emperor Wuling, with the temple name Minzong, and later changed it to Emperor Xiaocheng with the temple name Xizong (Jin zhi).
