Tripiṭaka Master of the Song was originally named Yongdao, and his bestowed name was changed to Fadao. In the first year of Xuanhe under Huizong, an edict changed the title of Buddha to 'Golden Immortal of Great Awakening.' Great Master Baojue Yongdao of Chongxian Xiangji Cloister on the Left Street submitted a memorial remonstrating against it. The Emperor was enraged and degraded Dao to Daozhou. In the seventh year of Xuanhe, an edict summoned Dao back to the capital and restored his monastic appearance and robes; the court commended his defense of the Dharma, changing his bestowed name to Fadao, appointing him to reside at Zhaoxiang Zhaoxian Cloister and concurrently oversee Xiansheng Shijia Cloister on the Right Street. In the first year of Jianyan under Gaozong, the imperial birthday on the twenty-first day of the fifth month was designated the Tianshen Festival. The Stay-behind of Bianjing, Zong Ze, acting on imperial authority, invited Dao to reside at Tianqing Monastery on the Left Street and appointed him Court Gentleman for Ceremonial Instruction to offer prayers for the realm and participate in military planning. In the third year, Dao followed the imperial cortege on its southern tour; he was repeatedly summoned to the Prime Minister's hall to participate in deliberations on military and state affairs. The court wished to bestow official headgear and robes upon him, but Dao declined, and the Emperor followed his wish, confirming his former title Baojue and additionally conferring upon him the title 'Great Master Yuantong Faji'. In the fifth month of the fourth year, the imperial cortege returned and halted at Yuezhou. There was a summer drought, and an edict ordered Dao to pray for rain at Yuantong Jiao Monastery; rain fell copiously, and the Emperor was pleased. In the second month of the second year of Shaoxing, Dao was summoned for an audience; after a lengthy discussion, an edict appointed him abbot of Donglin Taiping Xinglong Chan Monastery on Mount Lu in Jiangzhou. In the second month, spring, of the third year, Dao submitted a memorandum stating that the ceremonial order of monks and Daoists should follow the established laws of the ancestral emperors. In the fifth month, there was a summer drought; an edict summoned Dao to enter the inner palace to pray for rain, which fell copiously, and the Emperor bestowed upon Dao a golden alms bowl. Reaching this seventeenth year of Shaoxing, in the fourth month Dao wrote the preface for the Da Song sengshi lüe (Brief History of the Buddhist Clergy under the Great Song). On the twenty-first day of the seventh month, autumn, he sat in the lotus posture and said to his disciples: 'The upholding of the Dharma gate now rests with all of you.' Having spoken, he passed away. A stupa was erected for him at Jiulisong by West Lake in Hangzhou. During the Jiading reign of Emperor Ningzong, Wu Keji of Dongyang wrote a biography for Dao (Prefecture Gazetteer).
