辛未咸淳七年三月。淮西制置司申襄圍不解。乞調兵增戍。韃靼國建國號大元。取周易乾元之義。以明資始之功（續宋通鑑）。

The xinwei year, the seventh year of Xianchun [1271], the third month. The Huaixi Pacification Commission reported that the siege of Xiangyang had not been lifted, begging for troops to be dispatched to reinforce the garrison. The Tatar State established its dynastic name as the Great Yuan, taking the meaning of "the creative origin" (qian yuan) from the Book of Changes to illustrate the virtue that serves as the beginning of all things (Xu Song tongjian).
