His taboo personal name was Shubao; he was the eldest son of Emperor Xuan. In the first month of the renyin year, he ascended the imperial throne. In the ninth month, he held an Unhindered Assembly in the Daji Hall, relinquishing his person, his imperial carriages, garments, and regalia (Bianzheng lu).
