Yunyan: Chan Master Yunyan of Tanzhou was named Tancheng, of the Wang family of Jianchang in Zhongling. In his youth he left home at Shimen and studied under Chan Master Baizhang Hai for twenty years, but the affinities did not tally. Later he visited Yaoshan. Yaoshan asked, "What Dharma did Baizhang preach?" The Master said, "One day when he entered the hall and the great assembly stood still, he dispersed them all at once with his staff. He then summoned the great assembly; when the assembly turned their heads, Baizhang said, 'What is it?'" Yaoshan said, "Today, thanks to you, I have managed to see Brother Hai!" The Master had an immediate awakening at these words and straightway bowed. In the first year of Huichang, on the twenty-sixth day of the tenth month, he summoned the prior and ordered a meal to be prepared, saying, "Tomorrow a senior monk will depart." On the night of the twenty-seventh, he entered quiescence. After cremation, over a thousand relics were obtained and buried in a stone chamber. An edict posthumously conferred the title Great Master Wuzhu, and his stupa was called Jingsheng. The Master was the heir of Chan Master Yaoshan Yan and transmitted the teaching to his disciple Dongshan Liangjie. The Caodong school originated with the Master (Transmission of the Lamp).
