Jiashan. Chan Master Jiashan of Li Prefecture was named Shanhui. He was a son of the Liao family of Guangzhou. In his early years he went forth from the household, was ordained upon reaching the proper age, studied the sutras and treatises, and thoroughly mastered the three trainings. He assumed abbacy at Helin in Run Prefecture (the region of Yangzhou, Zhenjiang Circuit, Western Zhe Circuit). Through the guidance of Daowu, he met Chan Master Chuanzi Cheng; at Huating, he chimed with the essential mind. Reverently following his final instruction, he retired from the world and forgot worldly schemes. During the Xiantong reign era of Yizong, he lingered in Feng Prefecture; students gathered like clouds, accompanying him to choose a dwelling on Mount Jiashan, which then became a monastic compound. Arriving at the first year of Zhonghe, on the seventh day of the eleventh month, he passed into quiescence and was buried on his home mountain. He was posthumously granted the title 'Great Master Chuanming.' He was the dharma heir of Chan Master Chuanzi Cheng (Transmission of the Lamp).
