Dharma Master Fozhi: Śāripa [Salopa / Shes rab dpal] Guanzhao tonsured and dyed his robes under Imperial Preceptor Phags-pa. He studied the consecration rituals of the various divisions. He also followed Acārya Cher-chig to study the Mahāyāna and Hīnayāna. At that time, Ciwunbu was skilled in the esoteric teachings and was renowned in the world; [Śāripa] went to him and fully attained his teachings. Thus he was skilled in the Tibetan language and also comprehended the scripts of various kingdoms. Later, because Imperial Preceptor Karuṇā-dpal recommended him to Shizu, he was ordered to translate a number of divisions of both exoteric and esoteric scriptures not yet available in China. His diction and doctrinal intent were clear and discerning. He was specially bestowed the title 'Great Discernment and Vast Wisdom', and later the title 'Tripiṭaka Dharma Master Fozhi Who Propagates the Teaching' was added. The Master was appointed as the Chief Controller of the Buddhist Teaching for Jiangzhe and Other Regions, and the Emperor personally saw him off with words of comfort. The Crown Prince and the various princes often inquired of him concerning the essentials of the Dharma. The scriptures he translated were all published by the imperial court. On the fifth day of the tenth month of this year, he manifested illness. The Emperor bestowed ten thousand strings of paper currency and ordered Grand Commandant Prince of Shen to oversee medical treatment. Declining them, he passed away sitting upright facing the Buddha. The Emperor grieved for him and granted funds for his burial, sending an envoy by post-courier to escort his remains back to his hometown to build a stupa (Gaoseng zhuan, Tongzai).
