Vinaya Master Guangjiao: Taboo name Fawen, a son of the Yan family of Shaanxi. At fifteen he was tonsured, and at twenty he received the full precepts. He studied the Lotus, Prajñā, Vijñapti-mātra, Hetuvidyā, and the Four-Part Vinaya from Venerable Wen; Wen entrusted him with the responsibility of propagating them. He once scorched his skin and burned his fingers before the Buddha image to express his utmost sincerity, and pricked his blood to write scriptures to illuminate the importance of the Dharma. He lived in seclusion at Mount Tai, not crossing the threshold for six years; he read through the five thousand fascicles of the Buddhist canon three times. When the Imperial Preceptor ordered the Master to lecture, he looked back and said to his disciples: "Who could have said that such a monk exists in the Chinese land?" When the Son of Heaven heard of this, he summoned him to the imperial court. An imperial decree ordered him to reside at Taiyuan Monastery and conferred on him the title of Grand Master of Glorious Happiness. Later he moved to Da Puqing Monastery, and was granted the title of Specially Appointed Official Equal to the Three Excellencies, Silver Seal of the First Rank. Princes and grand ministers looked up to his lofty manner, like the auspicious omen of the lucky star and the phoenix in an enlightened era. Later he was granted the title of 'Vinaya Master Shixiang Yuanming Guangjiao', and was bestowed the Liaoshi gold-lettered Vinaya scripture. Those who sought the precepts from him were beyond count. In the third month of this year, he passed away sitting in the lotus posture. An imperial grant of silk was provided for his burial, and officials with ceremonial guards and banners escorted him (Tongzai).
