Great Master Hongjiao: His monastic name was Liaoxing, and his style was Dalin; he was a son of the Wu family. At first, he tonsured under Venerable An. Having received the full precepts, he attended various lecture platforms, thoroughly investigating the Tripiṭaka. Meeting National Preceptor Zhenjue, his mind was awakened. Worthies such as Tan of Bailin, Huai of Guanfu, and Ci of Nanyang were all renowned throughout their era for the Xianshou school; he visited all their gates and grasped their abstruse purport. He travelled north to Yan and Ji, concealing his traces beneath the imperial palace gates, carefree as if dwelling along rivers and seas, as though forgetting and being forgotten by the world. Emperor Chengzong summoned him to reside at Wanning Monastery, and his reputation resounded within and without. The Empress Dowager founded a monastery on Mount Wutai named Da Puning Monastery and invited the master to be its first-generation abbot. The master did not seek to conform to the times nor did he bow to others; those who understood him esteemed his lofty integrity. In the ninth month of this year, he passed away. He was posthumously titled Great Master Hongjiao.
