壬戌至治二年。有言佛教可治天下。帝問拜住。對曰。清淨寂滅自治可也。若治天下。舍仁義則綱常亂矣。

In the renxu year, the second year of the Zhizhi reign era, someone stated that Buddhism could govern the realm. The Emperor asked Baiju, who replied: "Purity and quiescence are suitable for governing oneself. But if governing the realm, if one casts aside humaneness and righteousness, the cardinal human relationships will fall into chaos."
