Great Master Foguang: His monastic name was Zhide, and his style was Yunyan; he was a native of Dongchang. At twelve, he received the sūtras from Venerable Haiwen. He studied the doctrine of the Ci'en school under Venerable Xi of Fazhao, fully grasping its deep essentials. During the Zhiyuan era, Emperor Shizu granted him an audience and bestowed a feast as well as a purple square robe. He was ordered to preside over the two monasteries of Tianxi and Jingzhong; daily he lectured on commentaries to the Lotus Sūtra, Avataṃsaka Sūtra, Consciousness-Only, Diamond Sūtra, and others. He was specially bestowed the title Great Master Foguang. When bestowing the precepts on the seven assemblies, he invariably had them take vows not to violate them. In years of famine, he boiled congee to feed tens of thousands of starving people. He resided at Tianxi for over thirty years; with one robe and one pair of sandals, he never changed them his entire life. He did not eat past noon. At night, he sat upright, and from arduous chanting he lost his sight. Suddenly, he dreamed of an Indian monk welcoming him to dwell on a high seat in the Inner Court, with flowers raining down from the sky, whereupon he manifested illness. On the twenty-seventh day of the second month of this year, while chanting incessantly, he soon took leave of the assembly, sat peacefully, and transformed. His worldly age was eighty-eight. His reliquary was kept for twenty-one days, and his countenance was as fresh and ruddy as if alive. After cremation, his relics (śarīra) were innumerable. A pagoda was erected for him at Mount Zhangjia. Zhao Mengfu composed the record.
