Huiguang: The monk Rongzhao, courtesy name Huiguang. He received ordination at Huazang and practiced Tiantai doctrinal contemplation. Later, he followed Dharma Master Yuansou Zhan, residing at Yanqing in Huating. He exerted great effort in the doctrinal teachings and diligently cultivated chan concentration, burning oil to prolong the daylight, day and night without interruption. Thus, his learning was attained through his will. He stood out among monastic assemblies, holding office and promoting the welfare of the multitude for more than forty years. His reputation reached the capital, and the Emperor praised him and bestowed a title. Every year on New Year's Day, the master led the assembly in practicing the Golden Light Repentance to pray for imperial longevity. Beyond preaching the Dharma, he exerted himself in ritual repentance, sweeping away defilements and obscurations for all sentient beings and leading them into wholesome roots. In his old age, he grew even more diligent. Three disciples received his Dharma; the Biographies of Monks identifies them as Jujian, Zongju, and Zongquan, all of whom were dragons and elephants of the Dharma gate.
