Fan Guo, courtesy name Deji, was a native of Qingjiang. By natural endowment, he was exceptionally gifted. Although lean, austere, and seemingly unable to bear the weight of his clothing, he distinguished himself far above vulgar customs. Wu Cheng, in his epitaph, considered him an extraordinary and independent gentleman who could match the noble men of the Eastern Han; this was indeed no empty praise.
