In the yiyou year, the fifth year of the Zhizheng reign era, the Chancellor of the Hanlin Academy, [Shan][Shan], when dealing with affairs, was heroic and spirited, raising his beard in debate. Whenever there was a celestial anomaly or calamity among the people, he would inevitably urge the Emperor to cultivate himself with vigilance, so that the will of Heaven might be turned back. He was skilled in calligraphy, and after his death, people vied to cherish whatever scrap of paper survived. The three histories of the Song, Jin, and Liao were completed. The Emperor said, "Now that the histories have been compiled into books, I shall take what was good in the ancients as a model and what was evil as a warning. How could this be only for the ruler? Officials, too, should know this, taking the good and bad of previous dynasties as an exhortation."
