Dharma Master Zhuyuan, whose personal name was Shuisheng, whose courtesy name was Zhuyuan, and who called himself Old Man Wuzhu, was a man of Leping surnamed Fan. His mother was of the Xu family. When he was born, an auspicious light illuminated the room. He took the tonsure under the venerable Chang of Luoshan. He visited the venerable Zhong of Yueting. Seeing Master Ji of Guzhou, he gained full faith that the Dharma could certainly be realized. Thereupon he made a vow, saying: "If in this life I cannot become a buddha, I shall enter Avīci Hell." From then on, he investigated with utmost effort and awakened several times. Master Ji recorded a prophecy for him, saying: "Later you will greatly propagate our school." During the Tianli reign era, the master was invited to serve as abbot of Miaoguo Monastery on West Lake. For a time, ministers and lords maintained very close friendships with the master as friends beyond worldly concerns. On the twenty-fourth day of the fourth month of this year, he wrote a verse and passed away at the age of seventy-three. Exhorting his students, the master once said, "You must thoroughly penetrate the mind-lineage of all buddhas, so that practice and understanding accord with each other."
