Han Shantong was a man of Luancheng. Beginning with his grandfather, his family had deluded the masses by burning incense in the White Lotus Society. By the time of Shantong, he proclaimed that the world was in great chaos and that Maitreya Buddha had descended to be reborn. The simple folk of Henan, the Huai, and the Yangzi regions readily believed him. Futong and others again deceitfully asserted that Shantong was in truth the eighth-generation descendant of Emperor Huizong of the Song, destined to become the ruler of China. They sacrificed a white horse and a black ox, swore an oath to Heaven and Earth, and agreed to rise in rebellion together. When the matter was discovered, the county magistrate pursued them urgently; Shantong was captured. His wife, of the Yang family, and his son, Han Lin'er, fled to Wu'an.
