Chan Master Baiwu, whose personal name was Qinggong, was a man of Changshu. His clan name was Wen, and his mother was of the Liu family. When he was born, an extraordinary light appeared. Relying on Chongfu Yongwei, he left home, shaved his head, and received the full precepts. He climbed Mount Tianmu and saw Gaofeng. Gaofeng asked, "Why have you come?" The master said, "I wish to seek the Great Dharma." Gaofeng said, "How could the Great Dharma be easily sought? You must burn finger incense first." The master said, "Today I have personally seen the Venerable; how could the Great Dharma be concealed?" Gaofeng tacitly acknowledged him and gave him the gongan, "All things return to the One." After serving diligently for three years, he next studied under Ji'an; applying himself vigorously, he had an awakening, saying: "At the time of Qingming, just as the rain begins, / The oriole speaks clearly upon the branch." Ji'an nodded in approval and gave him the prediction that they would share the same niche in the future. When Ji'an resided at Daochang in Huzhou, the master had charge of the library keys. Ji'an said to the assembly: "This fellow is a golden-scaled fish that has leaped through the net in the ocean of Dharma!" Later, he climbed Mount Xiami, erected a hermitage called Tianhu, and dwelt there. Later, he took up residence at Fuyuan in Danghu. The court bestowed incense and silks in commendation, the Empress presented a gold-embroidered robe, and an imperial decree conferred the posthumous title "Chan Master Foci Huizhao" (Buddha's Compassion and Wisdom's Radiance). In the seventh month of this year, he died. His Dharma words and poetic verses circulate in the world.
