Chen Youliang was the son of a fisherman from Mianyang. He once served as a county clerk but was dissatisfied. When the troops of Xu Shouhui and Ni Wenjun rose, he vigorously went to follow them, becoming Wenjun's registrar and scribe. Soon after, he also led troops as a marshal. When Wenjun became overbearing and tyrannical, Youliang was resentful. When Wenjun plotted to kill Shouhui but failed and fled to Huangzhou, Youliang seized the opportunity to launch a surprise attack and kill him. He then annexed Wenjun's army and styled himself Administrator of Affairs (Pingzhang). Shouhui was unable to control him, and Youliang's military power grew strong. Later, he also killed Xu Shouhui, declared himself emperor, named his state Han, changed the reign era to Dayi, and occupied Huguang and other circuits. Later he was destroyed by Taizu, dying when an arrow pierced his skull.
