Chan Master Shi'an, taboo name Mao, style Songyin, courtesy name Shi'an, was of the Zheng clan; his mother was of the Hu clan, and he was a native of Fenghua. At age sixteen, he relied on Xiyan of Chuanfa Monastery to leave the household, and received the precepts from Vinaya Master Hui of Zhaoging. He saw the venerable Quan of Nanjian, and again visited the venerable Mao of Gulin. Lin said: "You clearly know that the four elements and five aggregates are the root of birth and death; why did you enter this bag of skin?" While the master hesitated, Lin struck him with his tin staff. The master was suddenly awakened. Later, he met the venerable Yuejiang Yin at Daochang in Huzhou, who invited the master to share the seat and preach the Dharma; the assembly was pleased and gratified. The Bureau of Tibetan and Buddhist Affairs (Xuanzheng yuan) appointed him to reside at Qingliang Monastery on Mount Ruiyun, and petitioned to bestow upon him the posthumous title 'Universal Radiance of Buddha-Light' (Foguang Puzhao). After residing there for fifteen years, he retired to Huitang. On the twenty-seventh day of the eighth month of this year, leaning on his table, he clenched his right hand into a fist, pillowed his forehead upon it, and passed away. His age was eighty-five years.
