Chan Master Fuyuan, named Fubao, styled Fuyuan, was a native of Ninghai in Taizhou. His secular surname was Fang, and his mother was Lady Zhang. He left household life at Chongfu Monastery in Hangzhou, shaved his head under Master Mei of Shihu at Jingci, and studied under Yuansou of Jingshan, grasping his core teaching. He appeared in the world at Lu Mountain in Cixi and then moved to Zhiman in Siming. In the early Hongwu era, when virtuous and practicing śramaṇas were summoned post-haste, he went to the capital with Yizhong and Rizhang and resided at Tianjie Monastery. He repeatedly entered the inner court, where his replies pleased the emperor. Detained for three years, he was granted leave to return and succeeded to the seat at Jingshan. Ascending the hall, he said: 'Like the earth bearing a mountain, unaware of the mountain's solitary steepness; like a stone enclosing jade, unaware of the jade's lack of blemish.' On the day he passed away, he suddenly clapped his hands and said: 'Ha, ha, ha! Assembly, what is this? Look and see!' and thereupon entered stillness at the age of eighty-four. His stupa was erected on the right ridge of Jizhao on the fourth day of the sixth month.
