Chan Master Danju, taboo name Zhiren, styled Xingzhong, sobriquet Danju, and also named Xiyi Sou, was a native of Poyang with the surname Wu. He attended Master Chun of Zhenmu at Bao'en Monastery and received ordination. From childhood, his discernment was outstanding and lofty. Master Zhikong sighed in admiration: 'He is a teacher of gods and humans born anew!' and bade him study under Yuansou. Yuansou kept him as his incense-attendant and had him manage external records. Yuansou said to him with delight: 'Secretary Ren is a tiger with wings.' He appeared in the world at monasteries such as Dezhang, Chongbao, and Wanshou. Academician Song praised him, saying: 'The venerable of Huqiu, a famous monk, / sees into nature as clearly as a mani pearl.' In the early Hongwu era, the Emperor inquired of him about the principles of ghosts and spirits, and the Master replied with a composition based on the Buddha's teachings; the Emperor was pleased. Nearing the end, he asked for paper, wrote a gāthā, and passed away at the age of seventy-four, with sixty-seven monastic years, on the nineteenth day of the third month, his death anniversary.
