Chan Master Xueguang, surnamed Zhao, cut off a finger to give rise to the mind [of awakening]. He paid homage to Master Miaoyin to leave behind the entanglements [of the world]. Seeing Chan Master Jizhao, he was urged on to make vigorous progress. He called upon Venerable Jiekong, engaging in repeated interrogations and debates until he finally attained liberation. His verse says: / "Spaciously and thoroughly, the ancient Terrace of the Spirit opens wide; / Ten thousand miles without a cloud, utterly devoid of dust. / Before departing from the Moon Palace, / The silver toad stamps and breaks the fetus in the water." / When approaching death, he said: "Blowing the iron flute horizontally rests upon self-mastery; why must one rely on Caoshan's borrow-and-not-borrow?" Throwing down his brush, he passed away. He served as abbot of Xiyun Monastery, and his stūpa was erected at Zhengfa Monastery.
