英宗長子。周太后所生。初立為皇太子。英宗北狩。帝方二歲。主少國疑。郕王監國輔政。未幾即真。改封帝為沂王。英宗再位復立為太子。英宗崩即位。在位二十三年。壽四十。上徽號曰。繼天凝道誠用仁敬崇文肅武宏德至孝純皇帝。廟號憲宗葬茂陵。

He was the eldest son of Emperor Yingzong, born to Empress Dowager Zhou. He was initially installed as Crown Prince. When Emperor Yingzong was captured on the northern campaign, the Emperor was only two years old. As the ruler was young and the state was unsettled, the Prince of Cheng supervised the state and assisted the administration. Before long, [the Prince of Cheng] ascended the throne, and the Emperor was enfeoffed as Prince of Yi. When Emperor Yingzong was restored, he was reinstated as Crown Prince. Upon Emperor Yingzong's death, he ascended the throne. He reigned for twenty-three years and lived to forty. He was posthumously conferred the honorific title: Emperor Jitian Ningdao Chengyong Renjing Chongwen Suwu Hongde Zhixiao the Pure. His temple name was Xianzong, and he was buried in Maoling.
