Dharma Master Yuanjing was a native of Fenzhou. Leaving home at an early age, he set his mind on the lecture arenas of the Xianshou [tradition] and attained awakening to the secret purports of various sūtras. He often traveled to Shishi Monastery on Mount Miaolou in Pingyang Prefecture, preaching the Dharma for the assembly. One day, reaching the Kiln Slope by the North Gate, he carved out a hermitage, where he sat silently in ease like a niche. Suddenly he instructed his disciples, saying: "I am about to return." When they asked for the date, he said, "Tomorrow." Rising at dawn, he bathed, changed into the three robes, burned incense, sat cross-legged, uttered a verse, and passed away.
