In the second year, yiyou [1489], Zou Zhi, courtesy name Ruyu, was a native of Sichuan. He studied at the Long'an Hermitage. At the age of nineteen he passed the provincial examinations. His fellow villagers vied to see him, and he composed offhand: "An old student upon Mount Long'an, / By chance plucked first place in all of the Three Ba. / In the world there are many tangled affairs— / Why should fellow villagers be so greatly astonished?" Later, he was dismissed for critiquing court affairs. His poem said: "When people reach white hair, in the end all comes to a close; / As events are handed down in the green annals, who determines what is true? / In dreams unaware that my person is still bound, / I follow the east wind once again into the Purple Court." Another said: "Opening my heart and gall completely—who knows on what day? / Beholding the royal robes occurs only now. / I only wish that great peace be free of all incident; / What sorrow is there if a lone minister dies ten thousand deaths?"
