雲棲大師　諱袾宏。字佛慧。號蓮池。杭城世族沈氏。初為諸生。三十後。禮性天理和尚。出家行脚多年。備甞艱苦。歸住杭之雲棲。創建禪林安居海眾。精修淨土玄猷。整飾羯摩勝軌。住世八十一年。著書三十二種。名聞朝野。法布華夷。過現未來善知識之樣子。禪教律部大和尚之標題。於生也福緣隆重。於歿也德澤綿延。乙卯年寂。

Great Master Yunqi: His taboo name was Zhuhong, his courtesy name was Fohui, and his sobriquet was Lianchi; of the aristocratic Shen clan of Hangzhou. At first he was a government student. After age thirty, he paid homage to Venerable Xingtian Li, left home, and travelled on foot for many years, enduring all kinds of hardships. He returned to reside at Yunqi in Hangzhou, where he established a Chan grove to settle the assembly, meticulously cultivated the profound principles of the Pure Land, and reformed the sublime procedures of karmic actions. He lived in the world for eighty-one years and wrote thirty-two works. His fame was heard throughout the court and the countryside, and his Dharma spread to Chinese and barbarians. He was a model for good spiritual friends of past, present, and future, and a benchmark for the great venerables of the Chan, Teaching, and Vinaya divisions. In life, his blessings and karmic conditions were magnificent; in death, his virtuous benefaction was continuous. He passed into stillness in the yimao year.
