Imperial Preceptor: The bhikṣu Phags-pa expounded the Mūlasarvāstivāda ordination karmavācanā rituals, and personally composed a preface stating: "Considering that the auspicious fortune of Jambudvīpa brought the beneficial appearance of the bequeathed teachings of the fourth Buddha, Śākyamuni Tathāgata, and that during the reign of the Great Yuan, the fifth sovereign, Emperor Xiantian Shudao Renwen Yiwu Daguang Xiao, ascended the throne. Naturally endowed with blessings and wisdom, he truly believes in the Inner Vehicle, universally causing the myriad realms to submit to a single transformation. Though he rules through non-action over the whole empire and supreme governance is boundless, his regard for China's propagation of the Way is unceasing in his person. Wishing that the continuous lineage of masters and disciples inherited from the Buddha down to the present day should not let the correct precepts and ceremonial procedures lapse, he causes those who practice goodness to constantly uphold them one by one, refining the three karmas and firmly keeping the four deportments. This is indeed the sagely emperor's insightful decree to rectify the Buddha Dharma," and so forth (Fozu tongzai). Lian Xixian was outspoken and upright at court. Shizu ordered him to receive the precepts from the Imperial Preceptor, the monk Phags-pa. Xixian replied, "Your servant has already received Confucius's precepts." The Emperor said, "Does your Confucius also have precepts?" He replied, "To be loyal as a minister and to be filial as a son—these are them."
