At that time, on another day, when the World-Honoured One was walking about in the woods, he saw discarded and ragged cloths lying among impurities and dung. He picked them up, wishing to wash them, and thought to himself that he needed a stone. Śakra Devānām Indra immediately knew the Buddha's thought. In the time it takes a strong man to bend or stretch his arm, he went to Mount Gandhamādana, took a square stone, and placed it among the trees. He said to the Buddha, “You may wash your robes upon this stone.” The Buddha again thought to himself that he now needed water. Śakra Devānām Indra went again to Mount Gandhamādana, took a large stone basin, filled it with pure water, and placed it by the square stone. When what Śakra Devānām Indra had to do was completed, he suddenly vanished and returned to his heavenly palace.
