At that time, on another day, the World-Honoured One entered the pond [made by the] finger to bathe. Having finished bathing, he wished to climb out, but had nothing to grasp. Above the pond was a tree called the kalaka, whose branches and leaves spread luxuriantly over the pond. The tree deity then bent down a branch of this tree so that the Buddha could pull himself out, and he returned to sit beneath the tree. At that time, Kāśyapa came to where the Buddha was, and suddenly saw the tree's branch bent down providing shade. Astonished, he asked the Buddha, “Why is the branch of this tree bent down to give shade?” The Buddha replied, “Earlier I entered the pond to bathe. When coming out, I had nothing to grasp, and the tree deity was moved to bend down for me.” Thereupon Kāśyapa, seeing the bent branch of the tree and hearing the Buddha's words, marveled at what was unprecedented and thought to himself, “The young śramaṇa has such great majesty and power as to move a tree deity, yet he is still not as true as my path.”
