At that time, Kāśyapa thought to himself, “Tomorrow the king of Magadha, along with his ministers, subjects, brahmins, elders, and householders, will come to me for a seven-day gathering. If the young śramaṇa is present here, the king, ministers, subjects, brahmins, elders, and householders, seeing his physical marks and the power of his supernatural majesty and virtue, will surely abandon me to serve him. May this śramaṇa not come to my place during these seven days.” The Buddha, knowing his thought, went to Uttarakuru in the north, staying there out of sight for seven days and seven nights. When the seven days had passed and the gathering concluded, the king took his leave. Kāśyapa thought, “The young śramaṇa did not come to my place during these past seven days. How wonderful! How delightful! I now have leftover food from the gathering and wish to offer it to him. If he were to come, it would be just the right time.” Thereupon the World-Honoured One, knowing his thought, came before him from Uttarakuru in the time it takes a strong man to bend or stretch his arm. At that time, Kāśyapa suddenly saw the Tathāgata and was greatly surprised and delighted. He asked the Buddha, “Where have you been traveling during these past seven days that we have not seen each other?” The Buddha replied, “The king of Magadha, along with his ministers, subjects, brahmins, elders, and householders, gathered at your place for seven days. You previously thought that you did not want to see me, so I went to Uttarakuru in the north to avoid you. Now you thought that you wanted me to come, which is why I have come to you now.” When Kāśyapa heard the Buddha speak these words, he was astonished and his hair stood on end. He thought, “The young śramaṇa actually knows my thoughts, which is exceedingly extraordinary, yet he is still not as true as my path.”
