At that time, on another day, the World-Honoured One reflected to himself, “Uruvilvā-Kāśyapa's faculties and conditions are gradually maturing; today is precisely the time to subdue him.” Having thus reflected, he went to the Nairañjanā River. When he reached the bank of the river, King Māra came to the Buddha's presence and said to the Buddha, “World-Honoured One, it is fitting now to enter parinirvāṇa; it is fitting now to enter parinirvāṇa. Why is this? Those who should be saved have all been liberated; now is precisely the time to enter parinirvāṇa.” He made this request three times. At that time, the World-Honoured One answered King Māra, “Now is not yet the time for me to enter parinirvāṇa. Why is this? Because my fourfold assembly—bhikṣus, bhikṣuṇīs, upāsakas, and upāsikās—is not yet complete; those who should be saved are not yet brought to completion; and the multitudes of non-Buddhists have not all been subdued.” At that time, the Tathāgata also answered three times. Having heard this, King Māra was filled with sorrow and anguish, and returned to his heavenly palace. The World-Honoured One then entered the Nairañjanā River, and by his supernatural power caused the waters to divide in two. Wherever the Buddha walked, dust rose step by step, and the waters on both sides surged up. Kāśyapa saw this from afar and thought the Buddha was drowning, so he came in a boat with his disciples. When he reached the bank of the river, he saw dust rising everywhere the Buddha walked, marveled at this rare occurrence, and thought to himself, “Although the young śramaṇa has such supernatural power, he is still not as true as my path.” At that time, Kāśyapa asked the Buddha, “Young śramaṇa, do you wish to board the boat?” The Buddha said, “Very well.” Thereupon the World-Honoured One, through his supernatural power, entered through the bottom of the boat and sat cross-legged. When Kāśyapa saw that the Buddha entered through the bottom of the boat without it leaking, he marveled at this rare occurrence and thought to himself, “The young śramaṇa possesses such unconstrained supernatural power, yet he is still not like me, who have attained the true arhat.”
