When Maudgalyāyana heard Śāriputra speak these words, he immediately attained the purity of the Dharma-eye regarding all phenomena, far from dust and free from defilement. Then Śāriputra and Maudgalyāyana, each having attained the deathless in the Buddha's Dharma, said to one another: 'We have each gained benefit in the Buddha's Dharma. Now we should go together to the Buddha's place to seek ordination.' Having spoken these words, they each summoned their disciples and told them: 'We have now tasted the nectar of the Buddha's Dharma; this Dharma alone is the path that transcends the world. We now wish to go to the Buddha to seek ordination. What do you say?' The disciples answered their masters: 'Whatever understanding and view we have today is all by the power of our masters. If our masters go forth, we will follow along.' Thereupon, the two took their two hundred disciples and went to the Bamboo Grove. Having entered the gate, they saw from afar the Tathāgata adorned with the marks, surrounded before and behind by the assembly of bhikṣus, and their hearts were filled with great joy, their whole bodies leaping for joy. At that time, seeing Śāriputra and Maudgalyāyana coming along with their disciples, the World-Honoured One told the bhikṣus: 'You should know that these two men who have come to me leading their disciples seeking ordination—one named Śāriputra and the second named Maudgalyāyana—shall be the foremost disciples in my Dharma. Śāriputra is foremost among those of wisdom; Maudgalyāyana is supreme among those of supernormal powers.' Having arrived at the Buddha's place, they bowed their heads to his feet and said to the Buddha: 'We have attained the traces of the path in the Buddha's Dharma, and we delight in wishing to go forth; we pray you will grant your permission.' Thereupon the World-Honoured One called out: 'Welcome, bhikṣus!' Their hair and beards fell off naturally, kāṣāyas covered their bodies, and they instantly became śramaṇas. Seeing their masters become śramaṇas, the two hundred disciples together addressed the Buddha: 'We too wish to follow our masters and go forth; we only pray the World-Honoured One will take pity on us and grant permission.' Thereupon the World-Honoured One called out: 'Welcome, bhikṣus!' Their hair and beards fell off naturally, kāṣāyas covered their bodies, and they instantly became śramaṇas. At that time, the World-Honoured One expounded the Four Truths at length for Śāriputra and Maudgalyāyana, and the two immediately attained the fruit of an arhat. He also expounded the Four Truths at length for those two hundred disciples, and they immediately attained the purity of the Dharma-eye regarding all phenomena, far from dust and free from defilement, and went on to become arhats as well. At that time, the World-Honoured One, together with one thousand two hundred and fifty bhikṣus, all great arhats, widely benefited sentient beings in the country of Magadha. Among the bhikṣus, there were many whose name was Maudgalyāyana, so the World-Honoured One called this Maudgalyāyana 'Mahāmaudgalyāyana'. The *Lalitavistara* (*Puyao jing*) states: The Buddha had a śramaṇa named Assaji (*Anlu*), whom he sent to go forth to proclaim the Dharma and transform those who had not yet heard it. In the world of the five defilements, people were bewildered and had not arrived at the ultimate truth. Entering the city for alms, his robes were neat and orderly, his deportment and decorum did not depart from constant propriety, and he walked calmly and steadily. Because of this, whoever saw him felt joy in their heart. At that time, Śāriputra, whose original name was Upatisya, saw him from afar and was delighted in his heart. He thought to himself: 'I have studied for a long time, yet I have never seen a śramaṇa whose robes are so calm, neat, and orderly, never departing from decorum. Let me go ask him what path he reveres. I have always suspected there must be a wondrous, distinct path to be heard, not necessarily limited to this.' He went to ask the bhikṣu: 'What path do you serve, and who is your teacher and master? I would hear your aspiration.' Knowing his intention, the bhikṣu spoke a verse, saying:
