At that time, in the country of Sthūlakoṣṭhaka, there was a brāhmaṇa named Kāśyapa. He possessed the thirty-two marks, was intelligent and wise, chanted the four Vedas, and was thoroughly versed in all books and treatises. He was exceedingly wealthy and skilled in giving. His wife was beautiful, peerless in the whole land. The two naturally had no desires, to the point of never even sleeping in the same chamber. Because they had long planted good roots in the past, they did not delight in family life or enjoy the pleasures of the five desires. Day and night they reflected, feeling revulsion towards the mundane world, and diligently sought the method of renunciation. When searching in this way yielded no result, he abandoned his household affairs and entered the mountains and forests. Thinking in his mind and speaking with his mouth, he said: 'All Buddha Tathāgatas renounce their homes to cultivate the Way. I too should now follow the Buddhas in renouncing home.' Thereupon he took off his garments woven of gold thread and precious gems, put on a dyed rag-robe worth a thousand ounces of gold, and shaved his own beard and hair. At that time, the devas in the sky, having seen Kāśyapa renounce home on his own, spoke to him: 'Good man! The prince of Śuddhodana from the Ikṣvāku lineage, whose name is Sarvārthasiddha, has renounced home to learn the Way and achieved sarvākārajñatā. The whole world calls him Śākyamuni Buddha. He currently resides with one thousand two hundred and fifty arhats in the Bamboo Grove of Rājagṛha.' When Kāśyapa heard the words of the devas, he leaped for joy, the hairs on his body standing on end, and immediately proceeded towards the sanghārāma in the Bamboo Grove. At that time, the World-Honoured One, knowing that he was coming, reflected to himself and contemplated his good roots, [thinking] it proper to go and convert him. Having had this thought, he immediately went to meet him, arriving at the Bahuputraka Stūpa where he met Kāśyapa. When Kāśyapa saw his marks and extraordinary deportment, he joined his palms and spoke these words: 'The World-Honoured One is truly the possessor of sarvākārajñatā, truly the compassionate rescuer of sentient beings, truly the refuge for all.' Thereupon, he prostrated himself fully on the ground, bowed his head at the Buddha's feet, and addressed the Buddha: 'The World-Honoured One is now my great master, and I am your disciple.' He spoke thus three times. The Buddha replied: 'So it is, Kāśyapa. I am your master, and you are my disciple.' The Buddha further said to him: 'Kāśyapa, you should know that if one who is not truly possessed of sarvākārajñatā were to accept you as a disciple, his head would split into seven pieces.' He also told him: 'Excellent, Kāśyapa! Splendid, Kāśyapa! You should know that the body of the five aggregates of clinging is a great heap of suffering.' When Kāśyapa heard these words, he immediately saw the truths, and even attained the fruit of an arhat. At that time, the World-Honoured One returned with Kāśyapa to the Bamboo Grove. Because this Kāśyapa possessed great majesty, wisdom, and intelligence, he was therefore named Mahākāśyapa.
