At that time, the World-Honoured One said to the bhikṣus: 'When Prabhāpāla Tathāgata appeared in the world, was the ṛṣi Sumati any other person? It was myself. The five hundred non-Buddhists encountered along the road who joined in debate and rejoiced in accord are the present assembly's Uruvilvā Kāśyapa and his brothers, together with their retinue of one thousand bhikṣus. The woman who sold flowers at that time is now Yaśodharā. When the ṛṣi Sumati spread his hair upon the ground, the two people beside him who swept the ground before the Buddha, along with the two hundred people who rejoiced and assisted, are Śāriputra, Mahāmaudgalyāyana, and Yaśa in this assembly, together with their two hundred disciple bhikṣus. The devas in the sky who saw the ṛṣi Sumati spread his hair upon the ground and all rejoiced and praised him are the eighty thousand devaputras when I first attained the Way and began turning the wheel of the Dharma in the Deer Park, as well as King Bimbisāra and his retinue of eighty thousand nayutas of people, and ninety-six trillion nayutas of devas. You should know that causes and conditions planted in the past will never perish through immeasurable eons. Because in the past I diligently cultivated all good karmas and made great vows without turning back, I have now achieved sarvākārajñatā. You should all diligently cultivate the practice of the Way and never be negligent.' At that time, the bhikṣus, hearing what the Buddha said, rejoiced, received it on their crowns, made obeisance, and withdrew. The Puyue jing says: When the king heard from afar that his son had attained the Buddha Way, six years had already passed, and he had long harboured this thought. In his heart were sorrow and joy; feeling hungry and vacant, he wished to see him. There was a brāhmaṇa named Udāyin, intelligent and wise, who originally served the Bodhisattva and always understood his intention. The king told Udāyin to go and invite the Buddha, saying: 'Since our parting, twelve years have passed. Day and night I grieve, unable to let go of this thought; I wish to see him once more as if reborn.' Udāyin received the instruction, went to the Buddha's dwelling, bowed his head at the Buddha's feet, and reported the king's intention in full to the Buddha. When Udāyin saw the Buddha, with all the devas, Śakra, and Brahmā taking refuge and receiving his commands, he stepped forward and addressed the Buddha: 'I pray to go forth and become a śramaṇa.' The Buddha said: 'Welcome, bhikṣu.' His hair fell away of itself and he became a śramaṇa, attaining the arhat path, converted by the Buddha at that time. The others who attained the path and were converted before and after were beyond reckoning. The Buddha reflected to himself: 'Originally I made a pledge with my royal father that when I attained the Buddha Way, I would return to my home country to convert my parents. Now is indeed the time to return. If I return to my country without causing wonder, it would be unfitting and few would be converted. I shall first dispatch my disciple of supernormal powers, the bhikṣu Udāyin, to display his mighty supernormal powers, so that they will know the Buddha wishes to come. Only then will they understand the venerability of the Way, all will thirst for it, generate the aspiration for the Way, and many will be converted.' Then the World-Honoured One said to Udāyin: 'When the Buddha originally renounced home, he made a vow to his parents that if he attained the Buddha Way, he would return to convert them. Now that I have attained buddhahood and my virtue is complete, I must return to my home country and not violate my original vow. With your supernormal powers, walk through the sky and display supernormal transformations, so that they know I have achieved the Great Way. If the disciple is such, how much more the Buddha's boundless and towering majestic virtue? Only then will they believe and accept.' Udāyin received the command and flew with supernormal powers, traversing the sky until he reached his native country. In the sky above the city of Kapilavastu, he displayed countless transformations: emitting water from the upper body and fire from the lower body, water not wetting his body and fire not harming him. Appearing seven times and vanishing seven times, he vanished into the ground in the east and emerged in the west; vanished in the west and emerged in the east; vanished in the south and emerged in the north; vanished in the north and emerged in the south. He walked in the sky like a bird, sank into the earth as if into water, and trod on water as if on land. The king, ministers, and commoners all rejoiced, and only then did they know the venerability of the Way. Thereupon he spoke in verse:
