Seven days after the Bodhisattva['s birth], his mother passed away. Why was this? It had to be so. The Bodhisattva observed this: as his mother approached the end of her life, he descended to be born. While carrying the Bodhisattva, the devas made offerings to her; having tasted divine food, she could not savor worldly nourishment. Her past merit was such that this had to happen. All Buddhas of the past, future, and present are likewise so: seven days [after birth], their mothers pass away and should receive karmic blessings in the Trāyastriṃśa Heaven. As soon as she ascended to that heaven, fifty thousand Brahmā devas each held a jeweled vase, and twenty thousand wives of Māra held jeweled threads in their hands, to attend upon the Bodhisattva's mother.
