The sūtra says: The Prince heard the courtesans singing praises of the parks and groves, and thereupon wished to go out on an excursion. Attendants led the way as he left through the east gate of the city, and the spectators were like clouds. A Śuddhāvāsa deva transformed into an old man. The charioteer replied, saying such-and-such. Hearing further that all beings grow old, he thought, “Old age comes upon my own body as swiftly as lightning; how can this body be relied upon?” Turning the chariot back to the palace, his revulsion deepened further. On the four sides of Kapilavastu there was a park on each, their groves, ponds, towers, and pavilions adorned without difference. The Prince went out through the south gate of the city; the Śuddhāvāsa devas transformed into a sick person. Seeing him, [the Prince] became sorrowful and immediately turned the chariot back.
