There was a brāhmaṇa's son named Udāyin, whose intelligence and eloquence were peerless; the king summoned him to be the Prince's companion, to explain away his sorrow and gloom, and ordered him not to leave his side at will. After a short time, [the Prince] went out through the west gate of the city. On the road he saw a dead person carried by four men, with his family escorting him together. This was transformed by the Śuddhāvāsa [devas], and only the Prince and his companion saw it. Having questioned and been answered, he harbored even greater terror: “All must die; how could I long endure?” He immediately returned to the palace and went into another garden, reflecting on his former dhyāna-contemplation and long harboring revulsion and a desire for renunciation. He also went out on an excursion through the north gate, dismounted, and rested beneath a tree, dismissing his attendants to meditate in dhyāna. A Śuddhāvāsa deva transformed into a bhikṣu wearing the Dharma robes, carrying an alms bowl, and holding a khakkhara, who walked slowly with his eyes cast down and passed in front of the Prince. The Prince asked him, and he replied, saying, “I am a bhikṣu; I am able to destroy the thieves of defilement and remain untainted by the six sense dusts.” He then displayed his supernormal powers and soared into the air, vanishing. All the officials and attendants saw this, and it deeply resonated with his original aspiration. The Prince said, “Excellent! Only this is joyous.” Resolving his mind to cultivate the Path, he immediately turned his chariot and horses back, giving rise to great delight.
