A sūtra states: The royal father was gravely ill and told his ministers, "I have no anxiety about the end of my life; I only regret that my sons are in Rājagṛha, fifty yojanas from here. The Buddha possesses great compassion and clairvoyance that sees through all; I pray he will deign to instruct and receive me." When the Buddha heard that he was pining and near death, he told Nanda, Ānanda, and Rāhula to each go quickly while life remained. By supernatural power they arrived suddenly. The Buddha emitted great radiance, which illuminated and alleviated his affliction. Placing his golden arm on the king's forehead, he expounded the sūtras and Dharma for him. The king was overjoyed, drew the Buddha's hand to his chest, paid mental homage to the Buddha, and suddenly passed into the next life. The Śākyas bathed his body with scented water, wrapped him for burial, and placed him in a coffin. The Buddha and Nanda stood solemnly before the bier; Ānanda and Rāhula stood at the feet of the bier. Reflecting on how worldly people are unfilial and violent, the Buddha wished to personally carry the coffin in order to establish a model of transformation. The trichiliocosm quaked and subsided. The devas of the desire realm and the nāga spirits asked to carry the coffin. The Buddha ordered the Four Heavenly Kings to carry the coffin upon their shoulders, while he held an incense burner and walked in front. Hundreds of thousands of arhats flew there and were ordered to go to the seacoast to gather a great pile of fragrant wood and burn it. The Buddha expounded the Dharma of transcendence from birth and death. The bones were quenched with milk, placed in a golden casket, and a stūpa was erected. The Buddha said, "Because of his pure conduct, my royal father has been born in the Śuddhāvāsa heaven."
