In my view, the compilation of the Buddha's genealogy is different from the ordinary. Standard secular genealogies begin with the Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors, and downstream they branch off in various ways. The Buddha, however, began in beginninglessness, manifesting the dawn when he first initiated the quest for the path; and at the end he concludes in endlessness, making it clear that the conditions for teaching the path are never exhausted. Speaking from this perspective, the Master Śākya's transforming influence extends until the long lifespan of sixty thousand years, and the pratyekabuddhas take up the succession to the culmination of the auspicious era of [bodies] a thousand spans tall. However, where sūtras and vinayas delineate periods of one thousand or ten thousand years, they are pointing to specific inclinations, and there are also instances corresponding to persistent attachments. For example, the Jetavana was only a short distance from Śrāvastī; the Buddha resided there for twenty-five years, yet of the nine hundred thousand households in the city, only one-third saw or heard him. Taking this as an analogy, how could [the teaching] not be universally pervasive?
